Handmade indigo paper. Plaited.
Framed size 90 x 74 x 5 cm
The structure is a complex three dimensional, three directional plait. I have used the beautiful sunn hemp indigo paper made by Hussein Kagzi in Rajasthan. After colouring, the paper is burnished by rubbing on a curved block of wood with a smooth stone.
The strips in this piece are of 2 different widths, producing 4 different shaped blocks, which lie at varying angles. The design must be carefully drafted as all the strips are pleated before they are plaited together. Any errors in the order of pleating mean that the whole strip has to be unpicked and scrapped. The structure appears to ripple and the burnished surface of the paper animates it with highlights and shadows which change according to the strength and direction of the light and the position of the viewer
